Project Overview

A customer desired an applet so that employees could nominate their colleagues for an award based on the company's values. All nominations should be visible on a wall within Oak which should allow users to select and view the information. A user could nominate a single colleague or a group and certain users should be able to edit details and export records of the nominations.

My Contributions

I was the only designer on the project so everything you see I created myself. I was involved in everything from defining the users and user flow, creating wireframes, all the way to creating final UI designs.

Defining the users & flow

Working alongside the Project Manager, we discussed the main type of users for the applet and what actions they would take. We decided on 3 types of users; there would be colleagues who would be using the applet to nominate people as well as viewing other nominations, as well as assistants who would be nominating on behalf of someone else and finally admins who would need the ability to edit nominations and export the nominations accordingly.

Based on these types of users, I created a flow to show how they would interact with the applet at each stage and how the applet would be organised.

The Design

Once the user flow was defined, I proceeded to work on the design, first at the wireframe stage before moving on to the final UI and prototype. Once the designs were completed, they were handed over to the design team with any relevant notes to aid them through the build of the applet.

Feedback & learnings

The turnaround for this feature was approximately 8 weeks, with around 2 ½ weeks for design. The applet launched on time, and was received positively by senior members of the customer's team, with a large number of nominations quickly submitted.

Due to the tight turnaround of this project, there were definitely some learnings to take onboard. The customer kept adding requests to the applet which meant that certain elements felt a bit shoehorned in to the design. If the applet was to be revisited, I would definitely make improvements to the design to make certain aspects flow better.
